What is radon mitigation?
Radon mitigation and radon remediation mean the same thing. They both describe the process of effectively reducing indoor airborne radon levels to below the EPA guidelines of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L).
We accomplish this by locating the points of entry, sealing them, and using a quiet exhaust fan(s) to pull the gas outside. Points of entry are typically the area of lowest contact such as a basement, crawlspace, concrete slab, or parking garage.
The system can be installed one of two ways; either a concealed system, which runs the vent pipe through the garage or attic, or an exterior stack system which usually runs along the rear exterior of the house or building. (pictured below). We will discuss your radon mitigation plan with you in detail, and design it to be as unobtrusive as possible of course.
Radon mitigation methods
Sub-Slab Depressurization (commonly called Sub-Slab Suction) is a mitigation method that extracts radon laden air from beneath the foundation of your building, then vents the radon gas to the outside using a commercial fan and duct(s). It is similar in appearance to a sump pump installation.
Sub-Membrane Ventilation is very similar to sub-slab suction, and is the most effective mitigation method for dirt floored basements and crawlspaces. A plastic collection barrier covers the soil and is connected to the mitigation fan which exhausts the radon-laden air to the outside of the building.
Block Wall Suction uses a fan and duct(s) to create a vacuum in the hollow cavities of a concrete block wall. This creates a negative pressure within the walls preventing radon escape into the basement. The mitigation fan system collects the radon-laden air and exhausts it to the outside of the structure.

What level of radon requires mitigation?
The EPA recommends that you take action to reduce your home’s indoor radon levels if your radon test result is 4 pCi/L or higher. Schedule testing.

How long does it take to get rid of radon?
It typically takes one to three days to remove the radon from your home. As long as your radon mitigation system remains on and running, you should only need to test once every 2-3 years to ensure it’s working efficiently.
Do radon mitigation systems really work?
As long as they are installed by a certified professional, yes. Mitigation of radon in the air is accomplished through ventilation, either collected below your concrete floor slab or a membrane on the ground, then using aeration or activated charcoal to remove radon from air and water supplies. A continuous fan pulls the radon from your home and keeps the air circulating so radon does not build up.
Do radon fans have to run continuously?
Yes. If the fan stops, the radon levels will return to the pre-mitigation levels within a few hours. However, powering these fans typically cost pennies per day.
How long do radon mitigation systems last?
Once a radon mitigation system has been installed and the radon levels are below the EPA recommended level, We back our work with a fully transferable 5 year warranty. So, if you need a new fan within that time frame, it’s on us. Still, the EPA recommends having your property tested every 2 years. Why?
